From the second Sunday of February in Norway to December 22nd in Indonesia, we have set aside a special day to honor mothers. So the theme of this month's Teitho Challenge is "Mothers".
Many mothers in Middle-earth made sacrifices for their children. Gilraen left her own people and lived years with the elves in order to keep her son safe. Ironically, Arwen raised Eldarion and his sisters in a city of stone after living in Lothlorien and Imladris, to prepare them for being rulers of men. Galadriel agreed to let her daughter wed an elf of Rivendell and seek her happiness there even if it meant that Celebrian would live far away and rarely see her family.
Tolkien left Legolas' mother up to our imaginations. Where did she come from? What did she do for her child (or children, if you prefer a universe, in which Legolas has brothers and sisters)? What did her son learn from her? And what happened to her? Did she sail or fade, was she killed, or did she live through the War of the Ring and beyond? There are as many possibilities surrounding Thranduil's wife as there are writers to put their visions of her to paper.
If you prefer thinking further outside the box, perhaps Legolas had an eccentric aunt to fill that maternal role or maybe little Estel saw Erestor as a second mother.
